University Scheme

Early in 2007, the Provincial Grand Master of this Masonic Province of Berkshire asked the Lodge to consider joining “The Universities Scheme” which was being promoted by Grand Lodge. The intention was for Grey Friars Lodge to represent and be the link between Grand Lodge and the Province of Berkshire and to promote the aims and objectives of the scheme within The University of Reading.

Detailed discussions took place within the Lodge with a visit by the President RW.Bro. David Williamson, Assistant Grand Master and Chairman, W.Bro.Oliver Lodge, DepGDC to our January 2008 meeting at which the scheme was explained to the Provincial Grand Master, Executive and members of Grey Friars Lodge. Following this meeting and further discussion the members, at our October 2008 meeting, unanimously voted in favour of joining the scheme.

The objective of the scheme is “To establish and/or enhance arrangements and opportunities for undergraduates and other university members to join and enjoy freemasonry”.

Further details of the scheme can be found on the Grand Lodge website which is well worth a visit.

If you wish to consider joining Freemasony and would like more information then please use the contact page and we will make contact with you.

Currently we attend the Freshers' Fayre at the beginning of the new University Year each October and will be hosting an evening in the campus to promote the aims and objectives of Freemasonry at which all students will be invited to attend.

We have had approval from the Provincial Charity for the donation of £1,000 per year to the Bursary Fund to support Student Hardship and a further Scholarship of £5,000 per year for three years to the School of Pharmacy which is celebrating its 10th Anniversary.
